Our Story
At smallclaims.nyc, we believe justice should never come with a price tag so high that it keeps people from standing up for themselves.
Our story began with a personal experience that was both frustrating and eye-opening. After dealing with a mechanic who repeatedly lied, replaced parts that weren’t broken, and charged thousands of dollars without ever fixing the issue, we felt cheated and powerless. We gathered evidence — photos, videos, receipts — and set out to seek justice.
What we quickly discovered was shocking:
- Lawyers didn’t want to help. Most turned us away because the claim was “too small” to be worth their time.
- The one lawyer who offered to step in quoted over $1,200 just for a demand letter, and up to $3,000 if it went to small claims court — all for a claim worth about $2,000.
- The system was stacked against everyday people who had valid claims but couldn’t justify paying more in legal fees than the damages themselves.
That moment changed everything. We decided no one else should have to feel helpless, ignored, or priced out of justice.
